A collage from recent work (3.23.09) in my Junk Mail Journal. This study is composed with pieces of my phone bill, plus its assorted inserts, and a catalog. Recycling at it's best -- it's always fun to make something out of nothing -- these quick studies have to suffice when I don't get a chance to get to my "serious" art projects.
Junk Mail Journal
Junk Mail Collage circa 2009
Most recent entry to my Junk Mail Journal... the first of 2009. Fun to play with what simply shows up in the mail each day. Also appearing, a corner of a shard of china that was uncovered in a recent basement excavation. I can't bear to throw it away. I've always loved blue and white together. I may combine it in a shadow box frame with a photo of what the basement used to look like, octopus-furnace and all, and hang it in the newly finished space.
Journal page
Another page from the junk mail journal, circa 7.12.08, composed mostly of a subscription mailing offer for Midwest Living magazine -- several pieces sent in a plastic bag -- plenty of imagery to work with! A gluestick, some Tazo giant peach iced tea, and quiet equals a relaxing evening playing with paper and shape.
Junk Mail Journal
When my afternoon is not too crazy, I like to work on an ongoing, but sporadic, project that I call my Junk Mail Journal. The mail comes at about five o'clock and I create a collage using elements culled only from that day's mail -- inevitably it is mostly composed of "junk" mail. The work is casual, fun, and fast -- a nice compositional exercise -- and a way of dissecting everyday printed materials and using them in a new way. This is today's page.
