Imagination Navigation online

Imag.navig.postcardback
From the Abecedarian blog, "Imagination Navigation takes its title from a monograph about and exhibition of Joseph Cornell’s work. It is a show of 22 works by United States and Canadian artists working in assemblage and collage. The works were selected by Denver artist and exhibitions preparator Dave Seiler. While far from definitive, the exhibition provides a good overview of current trends in small to medium scale mixed media artworks."

Abecedarian Gallery in Denver has posted the show catalog online (requires Flash). Aside from the fact that my name is spelled wrong in the catalog/blog, I'm extremely pleased to be included in this one — featuring some really interesting and tactile responses to the concept of navigation. Worth a look!

Convoluted, a collage

More images from the show... this collage, composed of contemporary papers on wood panel, is 36 x24," with frame it measures approximately 38 x 26 x 2." In this case, contemporary papers includes kraft paper, safety envelopes (love those patterns), bits of magazine/newspaper imagery, and even the sharp cutting edge from an empty wax paper package. (Some things just need each other!)

Shadowplay, the collage

I especially enjoyed the connections of lines and patterns in the development of this collage. "Shadowplay" is another from the color constructs series in the Edge Gallery show, continuing through November 29th. The collage is 20 x 10 x 1", composed of contemporary papers on a wood support. (Click photo for more detail.) My collages grow piece by piece, layer by layer. As the piece develops, I continue to cut, crop, rip, arrange, and layer elements, making decisions about what works and what is needed next to complete the composition.
